Resilience Like A Lilac

by | May 19, 2021

April of 2021 proved to be the most challenging and rewarding months yet, in my entrepreneurial journey. Much like the creation process of my favorite handmade pottery, each day brought the perfect storm of new and sharp opportunities for growth and learning. That reminds me of little broken pieces of clay that create a stronger, more resilient creation of brilliance when molded together.

I never anticipated that I would ultimately draw inspiration and strength from a nearby lilac bush through this set of circumstances, both personally and professionally. However, as I watched multiple inches of snowfall in late April—an odd and unique occurrence for Southwest Missouri—I realized that I should take care to maintain the resilience of a lilac during the most unpredictable of spring storms if I am to prevail.

Three tips for taming the “Spring Storm” in your life:

Create a mindset of intentional, prioritized focus. (Col. 3:2)

When a deluge of overwhelm creeps in, it is too easy to see life as a blur and throw up our hands with a mental block of frustration. Consistently take a moment to calm yourself, have the nerve to self-assess the situation, and intentionally reprioritize your focus. Create a calendar block for yourself if you need to. Focus on the steps you need to take to regain your balance after each storm to achieve a state of resilience and fortitude consistently.

Be flexible when the storm hits. (Phil. 4:13)

Picture a willow branch or a palm tree that whips in the wind of a hurricane. Even the most substantial oaks will fall before yielding to an alternate course if they are rigid and staid. Much like the picture, when lilacs face the relentless pressure of snow, their unflappable flexibility is vital.

Have grace for yourself and others. (Heb. 4:16)

When major missteps happen, the overwhelming power of Grace has the opportunity to shine. Without grace, what is the point of resilience? When blunders inevitably occur during epic storms in our life, remember that grace is multidirectional. Extend that precious gift of grace to your clients, your team, and those you love, including yourself.

Remember to maintain the beautiful resilience of lilacs through focus, flexibility, and grace. Your storm will pass, the sun will shine once more, and you will triumph!
